RELOCATION REALITY
The decision to change jobs and join a new company is always a stressful one. However, when the switch also involves relocating to a new city, province or country the choice becomes not only one of effective career management, but a host of other personal considerations as well.
It's critical to figure out all conceivable expenses associated with relocation. This goes well beyond just moving expenses, and can include everything from legal and real estate fees associated with buying and selling a home, land transfer taxes, government fees for changing licenses, registering vehicles, house hunting trips, and temporary accommodation. And don't forget about the time and effort associated with the coordination of these activities! Most people underestimate the time and costs related to relocation.
The best way to figure out the major changes and expenses is to spend some real time in the area - outside of when you're there being courted for the job by the employer. This trip can double as a house-hunting expedition. To make it as productive as possible, do some research in advance and/or make use of a professional house-hunting service.
Another option if you can't spend an extended period in the area is to ask your potential employer for the names of some employees who have recently moved there. They should be able to give you a clearer picture of the true cost.
It's also important to take advantage of online relocation resources which can help decipher how your new
compensation package will balance out with the expenses in your new location. Examples of web sites that offer Canadian relocation tools include
www.homefair.com and http://www.relo911.ca/calc_relocost.asp.
As well, most cities have their own website where you can learn about community, lifestyle, and local contact information.
Doing your homework on the all the factors involved in relocation is important to be able to negotiate the expenses and options into the job offer. Major areas employers commonly reimburse include:
- Moving expenses - employers commonly offer compensation for the movement of household goods, including appliances, packing, unpacking, and replacement value insurance. But check if you also hope to have other expenses covered, such as moving a second car, pets, etc.
- House-hunting trips.
- Assistance with the sale of your home & finding a new home.
- Travel expenses.
- Miscellaneous expenses - such as revising wills, transferring licenses, house cleaning, and altering existing furniture to fit the new residence.
There's no doubt the financial and logistical challenges of transferring an entire household to a new location will be an emotional strain on
an individual and their family. Professionally, some employers' relocation policies may provide for career counseling and/or job finding assistance for a spouse who must change positions. Individuals with children may be able to negotiate the timing of the move to accommodate such situations as a child finishing a school term or year. Look into if your employer will cover professional relocation services to ease the tactical elements of the move so you can concentrate on acclimatizing yourself and your family to the new job and area.
With the right knowledge, advance planning and awareness, beginning a new position in a new area can be an exciting and challenge step forward in your career.
