DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE THE BOSS?
Moving into a management position may seem appealing from the standpoint of increased income and greater influence over decisions. But to ensure it is the right step in your career requires understanding the challenges, as well as the rewards. This Careerbuilder.com article outlines the major areas and key questions that should be considered to know if you would be a good candidate to join the management ranks.
It's important to be a strong communicator who can not only convey the organization's objectives and decisions, but also be able to truly listen to employees and sense their non-verbal messages, as well as hear their verbal ones. In addition, individuals at this level must be able to motivate and inspire staff to develop a positive environment. Another essential component is the ability to recover from setbacks and disappointments and not let circumstances get the best of you.

SO FEW GOOD BOSSES, SO MANY FRUSTRATED WORKERS
In today's new economy, effective management is crucial for employee loyalty and retention. Mentoring, not managing, is what most workers are looking for from their superiors. Unfortunately, many managers don't have proper experience or training.
This CareerMag.com article explores the characteristics that can make someone an inadequate boss, the impact of poor management, and some solutions for both employees and companies.

MULTIPLE BOSSES REQUIRE GOOD PLANNING
Over the last 20 years, downsizing, mergers, and advances in technology have radically redefined the internal structure and processes of most organizations. For many workers, this has meant they report to more than one manager. This Employment Review Online article discusses the challenges that can be associated with having more than one boss, and how they can be used to an employee's advantage to acquire useful career development skills.
Whether it concerns an unrealistic workload or repetitious assignments, when encountering difficulties with multiple bosses, one of the first steps should be to ensure you understand the specific problems and how they are affecting your productivity.
Next is to present your case to your managers to resolve the issues. Ensure that your superiors are also communicating with each other, and are aware of the workload each is assigning and its deadlines.
If the difficulties are of a personal nature between your managers, remove yourself from the situation until the matter can be resolved. As well, no matter how much you may favour one boss over another, serving each equally is key to developing a professional image within the organization.
