Welcome to InterViews Online!
InterViews Online is a service provided by Mandrake to assist you and your organization in recognizing and developing strategies to attract and retain the most highly qualified talent.
On May 24th, it was announced that BCE had appointed a Chief Talent Officer, a trend first seen in the USA in 2000. Last June, I attended the first ever
Conference for Talent Officers, held in Austin TX, which explored the need for and the challenges of a Talent strategy. One year later, the belief among most organizations is that Talent is now becoming available, when in fact there continues to be a substantial difference between that perception and reality.
A Point of View will alternate between delivering an opinion on effective human resource management and featuring a range of articles we have selected which address these ongoing challenges.
We hope you enjoy this month's selection.
Sincerely,
Stéfan Danis
President & CEO

DARWIN DID IT - MODERN CHANGE MANAGEMENT
Learning how to effectively manage change has become a priority for organizations as the information technology revolution forces them to increase their operational pace, as well as heighten their emphasis on improving the working environment and achieving long-term prosperity. This article from
Hoppe Management Concepts, Inc. profiles some of the historical and modern theories of change management and how companies can now most effectively implement change into their culture.
Key areas of consideration are also outlined in the article's "Change Management Guide." They include:
- Establish a sense of urgency.
- Form a powerful guiding coalition.
- Create a vision to help the change effort and develop strategies for achieving it.
- Empower others to act on the vision.
- Plan for and create short-term wins.

MAKING EMPLOYEES COMFORTABLE WITH CHANGE
When instituting change, many organizations do not communicate effectively with their employees. This article from
USA Today examines how companies can more successfully convey messages surrounding change.
Organizations need to build a "change muscle" - where they have the ability to change on a consistent basis.
As well, "A", "B", "C", and "D" players must be identified. A-players respond well to change and make it happen when placed in key positions. B-players are receptive to certain types of change, C-players are comfortable with change only within their limited area of expertise, and D-players not only will resist change, but may even sabotage it.

TIME FOR A COMPANY CHECK-UP?
If a company is viewed as a living organism, then similar to the human body, it can suffer ailments that, if left untreated, can lead to a chronically ill workplace. This article from Careermag.com summarizes a number of these corporate complaints and how organizations can prevent and treat them.
The "check up" list includes:
- Spinal cord injuries - managers with no backbone.
- High blood pressure - unresolved anger on the job.
- Hearing loss - not effectively listening to employees.
- Blurred vision - failure to communicate goals.
- Hemorrhaging - rapid staff turnover.
- Low pulse - apathy and complacency.
