Welcome to InterViews Online!
InterViews Online is a service provided by Mandrake to assist you and your organization in recognizing and developing strategies to attract and retain the most highly qualified talent.
On May 24th, it was announced that BCE had appointed a Chief Talent Officer, a trend first seen in the USA in 2000. Last June, I attended the first ever
Conference for Talent Officers, held in Austin TX, which explored the need for and the challenges of a Talent strategy. One year later, the belief among most organizations is that Talent is now becoming available, when in fact there continues to be a substantial difference between that perception and reality.
A Point of View will alternate between delivering an opinion on effective human resource management and featuring a range of articles we have selected which address these ongoing challenges.
We hope you enjoy this month's selection.
Sincerely,
Stéfan Danis
President & CEO

HOLDING ON TO THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST
In the world of investing, there are certain fundamental strategies that can help one achieve a profitable portfolio. And according to the author of this article from
Office.com similar basic truths should be followed when it comes to building sustaining value in your organization through the acquisition and retention of top talent.
Included in these approaches are interview guidelines when choosing a candidate to ensure both the employer and newly hired employee have done their research and made an informed decision.
In addition, the article explores some of the most attractive methods to retain these quality people.
Insights are also given into the questions to ask when a key employee resigns to perhaps retain them, as well as to learn from the experience to make your next talent "investment" that much more successful.

HOW TO CUT PERKS WITHOUT KILLING MORALE
In today's economic climate, fiscal prudence is a top priority for all organizations. And eliminating employee "perks" instituted in more prosperous economic times, such as free coffee, snacks, and nights on the town, are some of the first things to go. However, organizations must take care to avoid creating an environment of uncertainty and disloyalty that can contribute to the loss of top talent when cutting back on employee extras. This article from
Fortune.com profiles some of the most effective approaches when having to abolish company perks.
It's important to communicate as openly as possible with employees and involve them in how and why the cuts are made. For example, an organization could allow employees to choose which perk will be eliminated.
Another effective strategy is to be transparent with employees about how much cutting back on a certain initiative will contribute to improving the company's bottom line.
If financially possible, organizations can also consider scaling back perks without eliminating them entirely.
Ultimately, the goal is to portray a sound organization that is practicing fiscal responsibility.

DOWNSIZING PAY, NOT PEOPLE
For most organizations, downsizing and layoffs are considered a common consequence of an economic slowdown. However, as profiled in this BusinessWeek Online article, a number of companies are taking the unusual step of reducing salaries in place of reducing staff.
The thinking behind salary reductions versus layoffs is that when the economy does rebound, it is much easier and cost efficient to have retained highly trained staff than have to find new people. As well, it is possible for the company to instill a sense of loyalty and team spirit that comes from sharing the adversity of the economic hardship.
But this unconventional strategy does involve certain risks. Employees could be tempted to leave for other companies offering a higher salary. Despite the pay cuts, employers still have the expense of fringe benefits. As well, if the workforce has not been managed well, salary reductions can cause resentment among staff.
Nevertheless, in situations where the cuts are handled sensitively - with the head of the organization explaining the reasons behind it - many employees prefer to share the pain and not lose their jobs.
