Welcome to InterViews Online!

InterViews Online is a service provided by Mandrake to assist you and your organization in recognizing and developing strategies to attract and retain the most highly qualified talent.

On May 24th, it was announced that BCE had appointed a Chief Talent Officer, a trend first seen in the USA in 2000. Last June, I attended the first ever Conference for Talent Officers, held in Austin TX, which explored the need for and the challenges of a Talent strategy. One year later, the belief among most organizations is that Talent is now becoming available, when in fact there continues to be a substantial difference between that perception and reality.

A Point of View will alternate between delivering an opinion on effective human resource management and featuring a range of articles we have selected which address these ongoing challenges.

We hope you enjoy this month's selection.

Sincerely,

Stéfan Danis
President & CEO

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AS THE NEW ECONOMY TANKS

The current economic slowdown presents challenges with which many leaders have never had to deal. This article from the Harvard Business School Working Knowledge explores why this downturn is different than most others and how managements can best help their respective companies through it.

Three main factors are cited as reasons behind the unique aspects of this slowdown compared with similar occurrences over the past century. They include:

  • Low employment with little or no inflation
  • Increasingly impatient investors
  • A reverse wealth effect, as investors who once felt flush with investment gains, even if they were only paper gains, scale back their spending as they consider how stock-market declines are contributing to the downturn and how much they will impede recovery.

However, the experts are divided on whether technology has fundamentally altered the economy. Managements' opinions on this issue will influence how they implement the article's suggestions to steer their respective organizations through the downturn. These suggestions include:

  • Trim inventories to their lowest possible levels and avoid taking on debt
  • Deal with current conditions as they present themselves
  • Beware of - or exploit - disruptive technologies
  • Tend to your core business as never before
  • Think of the new economy as being the old economy with a new technology.

WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE NEW ECONOMY?

Although there is a "battle under way to define the past, present and future of the new economy", as this article from Fast Company.com asserts, it is most definitely alive and well.

The article declares that, despite the current economic slump, the "real new economy" is back. Its foundation is comprised of "the expansion of individual opportunity, the disruptive energy of ceaseless innovation, and the transformative power of information technology and communications."

To illustrate these assertions, the article offers four further opinions that answer "essential" questions felt to encompass the new economy today:

  • Who has the next big idea?
  • What is the new economics?
  • Where is the next frontier of innovation?
  • How do fast companies work now?

AFTER THE SLOWDOWN? TRY DEVELOPING A TALENT STRATEGY

Requests from hiring managers. Useless resumes from now unavailable candidates. A soiled reputation from previous layoffs. Increased turnover. As this article from the Electronic Recruiting Exchange explains, these are all part of the possible scenario an organization may face if they do not take the time now to develop a "talent strategy" for their human resources.

A talent strategy is complex and can only be executed correctly with the cooperation of the human resources, compensation, career development, training, succession planning, and finance groups of an organization.

From here, a talent strategy has four main components:

  • Creating a forecast of demand
  • Developing a deep knowledge of the supply of key talent
  • Developing guidelines for deciding when to hire or develop talent
  • Deciding on tactics and executing a coordinated process.
